Mitosis Challenges: Read the Three Goals Before You Start

Prerequisites
Tokens to spend in the card shop, and at least one card slot filled
Checked

The challenge mode is the one place in Mitosis where a sale is a budget decision. You get three goals in a row, a fixed number of sells per goal, and a boss rule on the last one. Read those three cards first and the run turns into arithmetic you can plan; skip them and the same run turns into guesswork with four tries on it.

What the challenge panel shows before you start

Press CHALLENGE in the top bar and the panel opens on one run laid out as three cards. The header explains the whole mode in one line: beat 3 goals to open a chest, mix and match the best grid, mind the boss effect.

Each of the three cards carries the same three pieces of information:

  • The target - the cash total that goal asks for.
  • The try budget - how many sells you get, printed as IN 4 TRIES.
  • A payout figure under the card.

The third card adds one more line: BOSS EFFECT. In the run recorded on 21 October 2026 that line read YOUR FIRST CARD IS TURNED OFF. The same panel holds the difficulty selector - EASY, NORMAL and HARD - a SET LOADOUT button, and START.

The targets in that one EASY run read $39K for goal 1, $79K for goal 2 and $65K for the boss goal, each with 4 tries and a payout of +$162K, +$244K and +$458K. Those numbers are one build on one difficulty, not a rule. Read your own three cards before you start; that is the only version that applies to your run.

What actually costs a try

SPLIT does not spend a try. SELL does. That is the whole decision of the mode, and it is why the panel is worth reading twice: you can split all the way to the dish cap for free, but every sell you press is one of four.

During the run a strip above the SPLIT and SELL buttons keeps score: GOAL 2 OF 3, a progress bar with your current total against the target, the remaining tries, and the boss rule repeated in red under the bar. After each sell, read that strip before pressing again. If a card or a mutation did more than you expected, the bar is the only place the difference shows.

The try count is not always four. Later in the same session, goal 3 showed 3 TRIES. Treat the number on your own card as the budget, not the one printed here.

What the boss rule takes away

The boss is not a health bar in this mode. It is the third goal's extra restriction, printed on the boss card before you start and repeated above SPLIT while you play. The one we read - your first card is turned off - removes a card from your loadout, so the order you slot cards in decides which one you lose.

Community guides list other restrictions: fewer sells, slower splits, part of the batch not counting, and a first sell that pays nothing. We did not see those in the footage we hold, so this page does not repeat them as fact. Read the boss line on the card, then ask one question: which of my cards is the rule taking, and can the rest of the loadout still reach the target?

Losing a run costs nothing

Run out of tries and the game says so plainly: OUT OF TRIES, then your total against the goal, then NO LOSS! WE MADE IT EASIER. TRY AGAIN WITH MORE + CHALLENGE. In the recorded run the message reported $755K made against a $591K goal, which is the clearest sign the printed target had already been adjusted.

Two things follow. First, learn the mode on EASY: a failed run costs no Cash and no Tokens. Second, read the target again on the retry instead of assuming it is the number you failed against.

Cashing out and what comes next

Clear the third goal and the panel offers CASH OUT: +$458K in the recorded run, with a separate BOSS RESTART: GOAL 65K option beside it. The header of the mode says the three goals are what opens a chest, so clearing the set is what you are working towards; we did not read a chest opening, so this page makes no claim about what is inside one.

The card shop spends Tokens, not Cash

Between runs the card shop offers three cards at a time and prices them in Tokens. In the recorded build the shop read:

  • MITOCHONDRIA - 18 Tokens, tagged AGAIN.
  • CULTURE MEDIUM - 12 Tokens, showing +2%.
  • GOLD RUSH - 12 Tokens, showing +$1.7K.
  • REROLL: 6 TOKENS to replace the offer.

The shop's own instruction is tap a card, then buy, and it states that bought cards stay forever. Read the card's full text in the shop before paying: the short tags above are what fits on the card face, not the whole effect.

You start with three card slots. The skill tree has a node that adds a fourth, and the Extra Card Slot game pass sells one more for 99 Robux with the wording one more card slot in card runs, for good - so a bought slot keeps working in every later run.

A routine that fits the try budget

  1. Before START, read the three targets, the tries on each card, and the boss rule. If the rule removes your best card, rebuild the loadout first.
  2. Split to the dish cap on goal one to learn what a full batch pays on your account. No try is spent.
  3. Divide what is left of the target by the tries you have left, and treat that as the floor for one sell, not the goal. Stacked mutation balls and card effects move the real number.
  4. After every sell, read the goal strip. If the credit was lower than the batch should pay, the boss rule is doing something to that batch - change the batch, not the target.
  5. When the run ends, take the cash out if it is offered; if it says out of tries, start again and read the new target.

What this page could not read

  • Whether starting a run costs Cash, Tokens or nothing. The panel showed no entry price.
  • The full list of boss rules and how they scale across EASY, NORMAL and HARD.
  • Whether tries reset between goals or come from one pool.
  • What a cleared set puts in the chest.

Each of those is a real gap, not a "no". Until one is read, treat it as unknown rather than as broken.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do challenge runs cost Cash or Tokens to enter?

The challenge panel we read showed no entry price: only the three goals, the tries, the difficulty selector and START. Spending starts in the card shop, where cards are priced in Tokens.

What happens when I run out of tries?

The run ends with an OUT OF TRIES message that shows what you made against the goal and says no loss. The next attempt came back with an easier target, so a failed run costs nothing but the time you spent in it.

Do the cards I buy carry over to the next run?

Yes. The card shop states that bought cards stay forever, and the Extra Card Slot game pass is described as one more card slot in card runs, for good.

How many card slots do I get?

The recorded build showed three slots on the main screen. A skill tree node adds a fourth and the Extra Card Slot pass adds one more, so a fully loaded run can carry more cards than the three you start with.
